
Local Native American makes Eagle Scout
Colby Matthew Nez of Sandy, a senior at Academy for Math, Engineering & Science received Boy Scout of America’s highest rank as an Eagle Scout during his Eagle Court of Honor May 16..
Colby’s Eagle Scout project included a strategic effort to supply the Families In Recovery Staying Together childcare center with books, blankets, toys, and coats. In this successful community service effort, Colby donated over 900 items for children. Colby’s additional accomplishments comprise of a three-time state wrestler for Cottonwood High School. He is the first Native American 5A Region 2 champion in 2010 season. He has been named a 2010 All-Star by The Navajo Times and received a certificate of recognition for outstanding accomplishments in athletics from Gov. Gary R. Herbert.
Colby’s achievements symbolize a rarity for the Native American community; the Eagle Court of Honor included an authentic Native American traditional ceremony with a Native Blessing by Lacee Harris, Northern Ute. A Native American drum group honored Colby, the Eagle’s nest participants, scout leaders and attendees.
