At first glance, it might be easy to dismiss Argosy University. Its campus is located in an office building at 121 Election Road, Suite 300 in Draper, not a lush, sprawling campus like some other universities in this state. But although it’s small, Argosy’s approach to higher education makes it mighty and very unique among the other universities in the Salt Lake Valley.

Argosy offers students the chance to earn a degree, from a bachelor’s to a doctorate, on their own schedule. By offering a mix of night, Friday and online classes, Argosy caters to busy adults. Students at Argosy can earn degrees in business, education and psychology.

“Argosy is the most traditional, non-traditional school in the valley,” says Argosy’s President David Tietjen. “We care deeply about learning and provide the flexibility our adult students need.”

Argosy’s approach to education is made up of three components: providing relevant information, flexibility and supported learning. By combining these three elements, Argosy has helped many adults over the last three years earn degrees.

Flexibility is the key to their students’ success, David says. Classes are taught both in-person and online. Students spend one to two nights a week in the classroom and also receive information through the Internet. David says the blend of student/professor interaction and online accessibility is the optimal delivery method to help their students get the most from the class.

Relevancy is another important element for Argosy and many of its professors are still actively working in their field. This gives the students the most up-to-date information from their field. David says having teachers involved in their fields gives students a different prospective and a real world view of what they can expect after graduation.

Supporting students is important to Argosy. David says his staff works hard to make sure students don’t fall behind. The classes are smaller, which allows the professors to work one on one with students.

Students who choose Argosy come from different backgrounds. Some have already seen professional success and want to continue their education. Others are at a crossroads in their life and need a change. Argosy’s staff is there to support all types of students and help them succeed.

“We keep the best interest of the students in mind at all times,” David says. “We work with our faculty to address current market needs and adjust our curriculum accordingly.”

In addition to degrees, Argosy also offers certificate programs, which enables students to earn a degree but also earn a specialized certificate. For example, a student working toward a degree in psychology can also work toward a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor certificate. The training for the certificate enables the student to be prepared to take the state licensing test upon graduation. It gives them more knowledge in their field and makes them more marketable, David says.

Argosy has 19 campuses nationwide and has been here in the Salt Lake Valley for the last three years. In addition to its classes, the school also holds seminars and workshops in the community.
