Sandy Arts Guild

After celebrating a successful 2011 with productions and events around Sandy, the Sandy Arts Guild is already working on plans for 2012.

This year, the guild has several shows and events scheduled to entertain the community. Community Events Director Merle Marsh said the guild has plans to make the arts in Sandy even better than it’s been in the past.

“You can really see the direction we are going in from our past productions,” he said. “It’s going to be an ambitious year, but we feel like we’re up to the challenge.”

Marsh visited the Sandy City Council in December to give a report on the guild’s activities during 2011. Because the council acts as the guild’s board of directors, Marsh said he wants to keep them informed about all the projects the guild has taken on and what the board can look forward to for the next year.

It was also the chance for the guild to give an update on its online fundraising project “Fundraiser, no Fundraiser.” So far, the guild has collected more than $1,000 in online donations. The money will be used to fund projects this year.

Starting in February at the Council Chamber Theater, the guild will be doing a production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Feb. 17, 18, 20, 24, 25 and 27. Marsh said this will be the largest cast the guild has used in the council theater, which is located in Sandy’s city council meeting room.

The Youth Theater will be putting on a production of “Once on this Island” later this spring in the Mount Jordan Middle School auditorium. Marsh said the youth put on an excellent production of “High School Musical Junior” last year and he has high hopes that this year’s production will be as good or better.

“Youth theater provides a way for kids to get up on stage,” he said. “We have a lot of talented kids in Sandy, and it’s nice to be able to give them opportunities.”

In addition to performances, the guild has also partnered with the Canyons School District to work with Sandy’s elementary schools on holding art shows. The guild is working with the district to put on elementary shows in conjunction with the art shows it already sponsors for older students. The elementary art show entries will be on display at the South Town Expo Center March 22-29.

“The elementary art shows have grown to be a great opportunity for the younger children to display their work,” Marsh said.

The Interfaith Music Festival will be held this year on April 15 at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church at 3015 East Creek Road. This popular annual event brings together choirs from many religious backgrounds. It gives choirs the chance to perform individually and then come together for several songs. Marsh said its one of the most popular events on the guild’s calendar.
