Ravell Beckstead: A Tribute

Apr 24, 2015 10:51AM ● By Megan Mahajan
Former Mayor Ravell Beckstead, who served Sandy City in countless ways, passed away on March 22.

Mayor Beckstead spent a great deal of his life here in Sandy, beginning with his graduation from Jordan High School. He served on the Sandy City Council and was then elected mayor, a position he held from 1966 until March of 1967, when he relocated to Pocatello, Idaho.  As mayor, he focused a great deal on paving and widening the city’s roads to increase safety and improve the ease of transportation.

In May of 1995, he was honored for his contributions to the city, along with seven other former mayors. He was not present to hang his photo in City Hall with the others, as he was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In addition to his political contributions, Mayor Beckstead served Stake missions for the LDS church in both the Sandy and Mount Jordan Stakes. Always looking for ways to serve, he was also a member of the Sandy Lions Club and the volunteer fire department.

Sandy City is a better place today because of Mayor Beckstead; he was an incredible example  of what it truly means to give back to the community.

Gone but never forgotten, Sandy City is truly thankful to have been served so diligently and will ensure that his memory is forever preserved in its history.
