For the third year in a row, the Dimple Dell Preservation Community (DDPC) is hosting an Earth Day–affiliated cleanup of Dimple Dell park.

Last year the event drew over 500 volunteers who collectively hauled out over 10,000 pounds of garbage and invasive weeds from the massive park that stretches across nearly all of Sandy City.

This year’s iteration will take place on Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. (the Saturday after Earth Day). Volunteers will be gathering at the Wrangler Trailhead, located just south of the Smith’s grocery store on 1300 East.

Monica Zoltanski, the founder of the DDPC, said this year’s effort will be particularly focused on removing certain species of invasive weeds such as myrtle spurge, cocklebur and thistle.

Volunteers should bring their own gloves and wear long sleeves and pants because some people may be allergic to myrtle spurge, said Zoltanski. Good hiking shoes, sunglasses and water bottles are also recommended.

Volunteers (large groups in particular) are encouraged to register beforehand by RSVPing to the event on Facebook, which can be found through the Dimple Dell Preservation Community’s page.

Zoltanski emphasizes that the cleanup is a family event. Last year’s cleanup saw volunteers of all ages, ranging from very small children to the elderly. It also brought together a wide variety of people: Boy Scout troops, church groups, corporate volunteers, outdoor adventures and of course some good old tree-loving hippies. All volunteers are welcome.

“We can find work for everybody that comes that day,” said Zoltanski.

In addition to volunteers, the DDPC is also looking for local business partners for the event, either to help with supplies or to make a donation. (The DDPC is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.)
